Foot or Ankle Pain? Explore the Muscles That May Be Involved

Foot and ankle discomfort, stiffness and restricted movement can involve several different muscles that control the foot and ankle, depending on where you feel it, what movements aggravate it and how it began.

JSM Reset helps you explore the muscles that may be contributing to your symptoms and guides you through targeted self-resisted stretching and mobility.

Why Does My Foot or Ankle Feel Tight or Sore?

Foot and ankle discomfort may be influenced by muscle tension, prolonged standing, walking, footwear, repetitive activity, and movement demands. The muscles of the calf and shin connect to the foot and ankle and can influence how they feel.

Different muscles that control the foot and ankle can become tight or restricted for different reasons, and the location and quality of the discomfort you feel can vary. This is why understanding which muscles may be involved can help you explore more targeted self-care.

Foot and ankle pain can have many causes, including ligament, tendon, joint or nerve involvement that is not muscular. Persistent, severe, unexplained or concerning symptoms should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Where Do You Feel Foot or Ankle Discomfort?

Discomfort can show up in different areas. Some common examples include:

  • Heel
  • Arch of the foot
  • Top of the foot
  • Ankle
  • Calf or back of the lower leg
  • Pain when walking or standing

Location alone does not identify a single muscle, which is why JSM Reset combines symptom location with movement questions to help narrow down the muscles that may be involved.

What Is a Self-Resisted Stretch?

A JSM Reset self-resisted stretch combines a gentle muscular contraction with controlled movement or stretching. Your own body provides the resistance, so no special equipment is required.

Users should stay within comfortable ranges and stop if movement produces concerning symptoms.

Self-resisted stretching is an educational self-care technique. It is not a treatment or cure for any medical condition.

Try the Foot & Ankle Reset
